Continuing to spread the word about the stories and personalities behind some of Instagram’s best vegan accounts, I spoke to Rachel Greer about her journey and how she’s trying to inspire and encourage others.
Rachel is a 22 (soon to be 23) year old recent graduate dancer. She showcases a healthy and active lifestyle as a vibrant vegan on her personal page @RachieMac95. She also contributes work to a start-up Instagram page for a South London vegan meal prep service @plant.pots.kitchen.
How long have you been vegan and what initially motivated you to make the change?
I have been vegan for just over 3 years now towards the end of my first year of Uni. I’d sort of known about Veganism previously as my best friend wanted to try it after watching Earthlings, also my dad had been a veggie for a long time and as a family I was accustomed to some vegan meals. Obviously, I talked with her pointing out the cons only without any research myself but blinded by the information I had been fed from consumer capitalists. By the time I went to Uni to begin my contemporary dance degree, I had been discharged from an anorexia clinic- however, not to discredit the work of the industry, I don’t feel their definition of fully recovered actually represents the real thing, or rather I don’t feel I was prepared for the following mind-set of a recovered anorexia patient. I struggled constantly to find balance. I obsessed over meal planning, healthy eating, binging. I was DESPERATE to know if I was eating too much or too little. I was simply obsessed with food. On one of my many searches for meal plans I came across a vegan meal prep video…ad then a few more. I became interested in this again, remembering my friend. So when Earthlings popped up on my suggested videos I decided to watch it. After hysterically crying, shouting at the screen, the documentary finished, and I had a huge wave of guilt pass over me. I realised how selfish I had been over the previous 6 years, allowing my illness to cloud over my mind, and unable to see what really mattered in the world. I instantly went vegan that day. I have had many ups and downs with over the years after that with my physical and mental health and still deal with many now- but I will never not be vegan again.
What inspired you to start posting about your vegan journey on Instagram and what have been the best bits so far?
If you could only follow 5 instagram accounts for the rest of your life which ones would they be?
Can you list the 10 ESSENTIAL food items you always have in your cupboard, fridge or freezer…you know, the stuff you NEVER let run out because you use it so regularly.
What’s your favourite vegan recipe to make?
Ok I need to do two, sweet- Butternut squash pancakes from Gaz Oakley’s vegan 100 cookbook (fellow Welshie brining the good stuff) and the boyfriends Caribbean stew with rice and peas and fried plantain…. It’s a secret recipe but we have some good pictures on the @Plant.pots.kitchen Instagram page. Bonus recipe…couldn’t not put it in. We have our own spicy Cauli-bud wrap recipe coming up on our New YouTube channel soon which I will be linking on my Instagram page.
Is there anyone you follow or admire that you’d particularly like to meet in real life?
@NinaMontagne from Cam and Nina- she is hella inspiring to me right now. But I have so many individuals for different reasons that I would love to buy a coffee for and pick their brains.
Tell me about your friends and family. Are any of them vegan too? How have people close to you as a whole embraced your vegan journey?
As I mentioned previously my friend was the first one to bring light to veganism of the people around me. Once I went vegan eventually she went fully vegan along with her girlfriend at the time, my sister in law went vegan along with my Mum who took part in Veganuary and my little cousin of 11 went veggie. Lots of my family and friends have asked me questions being genuinely interested and felt inspired to change certain aspects of the lives after seeing my content – which was actually so heart-warming and means so much to me.
Would you rather have an avocado for a nose or slices of tofu for ears?
Tofu for ears as Id end up eating the avocado… don’t really like tofu.
What’s your greatest vegan food creation?
To be honest I feel my breakfast every day is creation of epic proportions…it used be all I posted about on my Instagram
If you could give one piece of advice to someone who is interested in taking the leap to being vegan, what would it be?
Listen to your body and do what’s right for you…take inspiration but be vegan your way.
Which 5 words would you use to describe the vibe/ethos of your Instagram account?
Mash-up, colourful, delicious, happy, ME!
What is the question you’re most regularly asked by your followers? Or the weirdest question you’ve ever been asked?
Not question more statement: that athleticism and exercise isn’t good activism for veganism.
Do you have any big plans for the next few months that we should look out for?
Bigging up @Plant.pots.kitchen once more, things are happening! On my personal page I’m going to keep documenting my healthy lifestyle, vegan and dance journey.
Thank you to Rachel for agreeing to be involved – please go and give her a follow on Instagram and I’ll see you next week with the next instalment.
