Why I decided to become a sustainability writer

I’ve always loved writing, so it’s no surprise that the path I’ve taken has eventually led to me running my own copy and content writing business. In fact, the only reason I didn’t do it sooner is because I got to do so much writing in my old job as a bid writer and commercial manager. So it was almost as if the need was being fed, and therefore I didn’t feel the urge to take the plunge. But when I was made redundant from my job in broadcasting after 15 years in the industry, the time felt right. I was going it alone! But why did I decide to become a sustainability writer, rather than just writing for anyone?

Becoming a sustainability copywriter – it wasn’t always this way

When I first set up my business, I actually worked mainly with clients in the broadcast industry.  It was where all of my professional contacts were, I was pretty well-known in the industry and I was relying solely on word-of-mouth to win new business.

These clients were what started it all off for me and I still work with some of them now! I love working with them and writing for them – and just because I’ve picked a different niche doesn’t mean I will drop them.

In fact, I’d say that I probably also specialise in broadcast writing, but I just don’t promote it as much, because my heart and soul is in helping sustainable, ethical and plant-based companies.

Travelling changed everything

I may have said it once or twice before, but travelling the world for 9 months in 2019/2020 with my husband and two children (who were 3 and 1 when we left the UK) changed my perspective on everything. Before we left, I knew I liked connecting with like-minded people and companies (see my predominantly food-based Instagram page). But travelling, and following our dream gave me the space and clarity to see I wanted to use my job to help make a difference – not just to companies’ profit margins (although I do that too!), but to the planet and everyone living on it.

Now, tomorrow and beyond

So, here I am, fully immersed in the sustainable business community. My LinkedIn feed is full of posts about the planet, successful plant-based businesses and really cool, innovative brands and products. It feels like I am where I’m meant to be.

So, what about the future?  Well, the way I see it, the only option is for all companies to become more and more planet-friendly. So I’d hope that as the movement grows, more people will choose this area as a niche. Because soon it won’t be a niche, it’ll be a necessity.

Can I help you?

Are you an ethical, sustainable or plant-based company owner who needs help telling the world about your product or service? Whenever I speak to a new client, I become totally invested in their brand and how to spread the word as effectively as possible. This is the benefit of someone who really cares about the niche they’ve picked. It’s not just expertise, it’s full-on, all-encompassing passion.
